I came across a news article in my hometown one evening that really bothered me. The headline was “Woman investigated for driving with baby on lap.” When I clicked on it, the story stated that many concerned citizens called the local police department about a woman that posted a Facebook video where a baby boy was sitting on the woman’s lap while the car was in motion. All I could think was, “Bad Parenting.” You can find my response on my article that I wrote for Kids Safety Network below:

According to APD, she will only receive a traffic citation for not properly restraining baby in the car seat. A mere traffic citation is what this woman would get because it would be difficult to proceed with child abuse charges because the video doesn’t show the person’s face holding the baby and the police did not witness in person.
[…] I can’t imagine that these two women didn’t know any better and the fact that this only results in a traffic citation for something so dangerous is appalling and disheartening. […]
A Great Example of Negligent Bad Parenting
I don’t know about you but when I heard that this woman would only receive a traffic citation for this, I cringed. It’s hard to believe that in this day and age, these two women; the driver and the person recording the whole thing, didn’t know the importance of car seats. I live in the same town as this woman and I know that when I gave birth to both my children in Albuquerque, the hospitals required they inspect the car seat my son would be traveling home in before they discharged us.
The fact that this was posted on Facebook for the world to see was negligent at best. This Facebook video has since been taken down. This is the perfect example of bad parenting and the appropriate response by society to take concern over the well-being of this baby and call it in to local police. It’s truly unfortunate that this woman will only face a traffic citation and this baby is lucky that nothing bad happened.
CYFD has since opened a case to investigate this further.
I want to hear from you!
Do you think this woman deserves more than just a traffic citation?
