A Great Example of Negligent Bad Parenting

Bad ParentingI came across a news article in my hometown one evening that really bothered me.  The headline was “Woman investigated for driving with baby on lap.”  When I clicked on it, the story stated that many concerned citizens called the local police department about a woman that posted a Facebook video where a baby boy was sitting on the woman’s lap while the car was in motion.  All I could think was, “Bad Parenting.”  You can find my response on my article that I wrote for Kids Safety Network below:

According to APD, she will only receive a traffic citation for not properly restraining baby in the car seat.  A mere traffic citation is what this woman would get because it would be difficult to proceed with child abuse charges because the video doesn’t show the person’s face holding the baby and the police did not witness in person.

[…] I can’t imagine that these two women didn’t know any better and the fact that this only results in a traffic citation for something so dangerous is appalling and disheartening. […]

A Great Example of Negligent Bad Parenting

I don’t know about you but when I heard that this woman would only receive a traffic citation for this, I cringed.  It’s hard to believe that in this day and age, these two women; the driver and the person recording the whole thing, didn’t know the importance of car seats.  I live in the same town as this woman and I know that when I gave birth to both my children in Albuquerque, the hospitals required they inspect the car seat my son would be traveling home in before they discharged us.

The fact that this was posted on Facebook for the world to see was negligent at best.  This Facebook video has since been taken down. This is the perfect example of bad parenting and the appropriate response by society to take concern over the well-being of this baby and call it in to local police.  It’s truly unfortunate that this woman will only face a traffic citation and this baby is lucky that nothing bad happened.

CYFD has since opened a case to investigate this further.

I agree with you completely! I think she posted it on Facebook because she clearly sees nothing wrong with what she was doing 🙁

Everyone these days should realise the danger of not using the appropriate child restraint. To be proud of not using it is beyond belief.

Some parents ate truly unbelievable. I saw a picture not long ago of a child in a pushchair in the boot of a moving car. The child had fallen asleep in their pushchair and so as not to disturb them the parents just left the child in the pushchair and put it in the boot. Why?! What on earth were they thinking? Unbelievable. Thanks for linking up to the #BinkyLinky

I think this women needs to be investigated and given more than a traffic citation. It is s terrible to drive a child in a car without a seat belt. It only takes a second to get in a car crash and this baby will be thrown and does not have a chance in a auto accident. This is worse than bad parenting. It is child endangerment!

  • http://Www.happiestmama.com Jasmine

I can’t believe someone would do that!

  • Terri Steffes

Yes I agree with you but I would put her in parenting classes assigned by the judge. This is preposterous!

Its so simple and easy and a no-brainer to do the basics for child safety. Wonder why it seems like a challenge for so many.

I cringe when I see the lack of car seats and don’t hesitate to try and educate parents. Some parents will never learn until its too late, unfortunately

I have a hard time with this kind of news. On the one hand, it seems like this person needs to get some help in making good decisions, and understanding safety basics. I feel the same about anyone who is doing a video in a moving car while they are driving. I’m more worried about the safety issue, and trying to understand why these kinds of things seem to be on the rise.

I haven’t seen this, but just reading this also made me cringe that she’s only getting a traffic citation. Child safety is very important.

It is such a simple thing that we can do for our children to keep them safe – I honestly can’t imagine any parent not doing it. Really hard to believe it is just a traffic citation.

Oh this makes me so sad because that is such a safety risk for the child…and one that could be avoided!

I am a little bit worried about our society. There are many parents that becoming negligent with their kids.

I don’t like judging other parents, I think we all have different styles. But in this case, it’s really important that you make sure that your baby is safe in the car and not do anything that will potentially harm him or her.

When will parents out there put their kids safety first. It’s crazy that people still do this. So many accidents happen even just in a parking lot! It’s so dangerous!

  • CourtneyLynne

I haven’t seen this in the news but omg!!! I swear some people just don’t use there brains!

  • http://fabulousinfayette.com Whitney S

I think it’s horrible that they didn’t take the proper precautions and have the baby in the carseat. Sadly, I don’t think a traffic citation will stop the behavior. Most likely, she will do it again 🙁

I ran into something like this recently and called the police. There is such a difference between bad parenting and dangerous parenting. It’s the law. They should be buckled.

I feel like car seats were invented for a reason, once we learned the true dangers of riding in cars, especially for little ones. I couldn’t imagine driving on the highway with a child on my lap!

As a parent, I find it shocking that this “mother” could be that ignorant ! You think you heard everything and then there are incidents like this.

  • http://www.taketimeforstyle.com Kristin

That’s pretty scary! It only take a moment for a car to hit another car and do serious damage to those not in seat belts and car seats!

  • Krystle Cook

Car seats are so important! You have no idea what you just don’t know because you were not educated.
