I am so fortunate to have kids that absolutely love books. It’s one of my favorite things to do with my kids and it’s part of their bedtime routine. We usually read about 2-3 short children’s books a night and about 5-6 books throughout the day. You can imagine that I’m always on the lookout for children’s books to read to my kids. Reading to your kids has many great benefits for their future including learning how to read and comprehension skills. As parents, it’s our responsibility to teach our kids about the world but sometimes we need some extra help in doing that. Mommy Engineering’s latest review is on a children’s book called The Little Green Boat by award-winning Australian author Chris Stead.
Accompanying this children’s book review is a quick survey about books your family purchases. The purpose of this survey is to help authors create and publish the best children’s books around! By filling out this quick, 30-second survey, you will be entered to win a children’s book prize pack that includes 7 digital and print copies plus a coloring book worth over $110!

Our Review: The Little Green Boat by Chris Stead / Published by Old Mate Media
When I first opened this book, I immediately noticed the first page had the parents in mind. It goes on to describe the importance of reading to your kids, how this book can help with your child’s development and a guide to how to help your kids work on critical thinking skills throughout this book. This is a beautifully written book that is much like that of other children’s books like Where the Wild Things Are and McElligot’s Pool by Dr. Seuss.
The cute song reminded me of the show Arthur from PBS Kids, a show my kids love (and is currently watching as I write this review). As well as being beautifully written, the artwork is just equally as beautiful to match for this book. Willy Nilly has a friendly face surrounded by eye-catching colorfully vibrant scenes that are sure to capture your little one’s attention. I was able to snag the iBooks version of this ebook and my kids enjoyed being able to swipe through the pages, listen to the song and sounds of the beach, and being able to touch the little brown and blue inner tube on each page to reveal the words to the story.
As a parent, my favorite part of this book was the questions provided on the parent/teacher page that allow us to work with our kids to build critical thinking. These questions were broken up into 3 parts: questions to ask in the beginning, during, and end of the story. They are questions I’ve asked my kids too and love watching them think through each question and listen to their creative thought process working in action.
I also liked how the book is written. It’s taken from the child’s perspective and thoroughly engages children to connect with the story. My boys love adventure and a book like this is perfect for building those creative and imagination skills I hope my boys never stop building. The book is 24 pages long but the story itself is quick, like that of a book narrated by a child whose imagination is running wildly in their mind. It reminded me much like how my 4 year old tells me a story when he pretends to read me a book. It’s creative, thought-provoking and perfect for any child!
