How To Have A Frugal Baby Shower

If you’re lucky enough to have someone else throw you a baby shower and completely fund it, by all means, sit back, relax and enjoy the free food, gifts and entertainment.  For the rest of us who had to plan their own, planning someone else’s, or having a financial part in planning any baby shower, read on for some tips and ideas to help save you money.  After all, you’ll need it when that baby comes!

Choosing a Date

We all know the best sales are right after the holidays end as inventory is liquidated to make space for the next upcoming holiday.  You can bet that if you plan ahead and choose a date conveniently after a holiday, you will get all the amazing sale prices on some great holiday items that you could use for your baby shower.

Choosing a Theme

It’s always so cute to have a theme for baby showers but you could save some money by:

  • Choosing a theme correlated to a recent past holiday (Ex. Peter Rabbit Theme after Easter)
  • Using a color scheme instead of a specific theme (Ex. Using just blues and greens instead of a Monster’s Inc theme)
  • Choosing generic themes rather than branded themes (Ex. Fuzzy stuffed animals vs Mickey Mouse)
Choosing a Time

It’s important to chose a time that is appropriate for your occasion.  I’ve found that the best times is mid-afternoon between 1:00PM and 4:00PM.  By setting your party between these times you can save money as you will not need to serve full lunch nor full dinner.

Baby Shower Games

Now I’ve never been a fan of shower games and let’s face it, most guests that come to the party are in it to support you and get free food.  At least that’s how it is in my family!  I’d recommend skipping the baby shower games because it will help save money for more important things, like food!  If you insist on baby shower games, keep it simple and keep the prizes simple.

Food Options

Depending on what time you have your baby shower, you can either serve full meals or serve appetizers, desserts, and/or simple hor’ d’oeuvres.  In my family, food is always the most important part of a party so we tend to always serve full meals and it becomes quite costly.  Simple finger foods is perfect for baby shower occasions and also a great way to save money.

Guest List

Most baby showers are women-only events but co-ed baby showers are becoming increasing popular.  Save money by limiting the amount of guests you invite.  My family parties tend to be quite large.  Not only because we have a large family but also because my parents tend to invite everyone, including people I don’t even know.  I highly recommend inviting just your closest family and friends.  After all, they’re going to be the best ones to get you exactly what you need and want anyway!

Invitations

I’ve stopped using paper invitations as they tend to get pretty expensive for the ones I want.  I’ve found I could design my own invitations and send them for FREE online!  There are so many websites that allow you to do this including evite.com and punchbowl.com.  You can even use Facebook to invite guests to your party!  With all your contacts in one place, its not only convenient, but totally free.  You can even send Thank You cards online though I still choose to do this part by mail.

DIY Diaper Cake

I couldn’t believe how much these costs to have someone else make them!  Save money and make your own!  These are so simple to make and all you really need is:

  • some inexpensive diapers, wash clothes, and/or teething blankets
  • simple string, tape, and/or rubber bands to hold the diapers together
  • 2 inch decorative ribbon to wrap each “cake” layer
  • baby accessories: stuff animal, pacifiers, bows, socks, etc to decorate

DIY Favors

If you choose to have favors, making your own will save tons of money and there are so great ideas for baby shower favors that are simple, inexpensive, and easy-to-make!  Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Go to your local craft store and purchase a large sheet of tulle, cut out large circle pieces from the tulle and use to make your own gift baggie for assorted candies! Tie with decorative string and curl ends
  • Make DIY hand/body sugar scrubs using 3 simple ingredients: sugar, olive oil, and lavender essential oil. Decorate empty baby jars to match your baby shower theme and use it as a container for your sugar scrub
  • Decorate empty baby jars and use as a container for your favorite candy mints
Decorations

  • Save time and money by decorating only the main table, a single room, and/or picture area.  Find the focal point of your venue and make this the center of your party.
  • Rummage through your home and/or kid’s rooms and see what items you could find to use as related decor
  • Ask friends and family for unused party supplies
  • Get creative – Visit your local dollar store and buy streamers, balloons, etc

Wife, Stay at Home Mom of two boys, and blogger. Friends and family call me Kaye but my personal favorite is "Mom." I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to be at home with my two baby boys. As an engineer by career, and stay-at-home mom by choice, I write about how to “Invent. Innovate. Design. Mommyhood” and what that entails.
